Art and Design

At Stoneydelph Primary School, we place a great importance on Art and Design. It is crucial that all children can express themselves in a creative and imaginative manner, and are able to explore a range of techniques and skills.

Our Art and design curriculum across school allows our pupils to ‘appreciate and interpret what they observe, communicate what they think and feel, or make what they imagine and invent’. (‘Making a mark’, Ofsted, March 2012) We strive to ensure that children have the opportunity to be creative and to know that all marks made are theirs and they are meaningful.

As a school, we often link our art and design learning with curriculum topics but we also focus on developing key skills such as drawing, painting and collage. Children will also be introduced to a range of different artists (local, national and international, and from different periods in History). Here they will analyse their work, and be encouraged to talk about what they like, dislike and notice about the different pieces of Art and Design.

It is important that children build on their skills year after year as they move through the school, in a clear and comprehensive scheme of work which carefully plans for progression and depth.
