Geography

Intent:

Here at Stoneydelph Primary School, we aim to deliver the Geography curriculum via our cross-curricular themed projects. Our aim is to inspire children’s curiosity by provoking thoughts and questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. Children will explore how the world has changed over time and their role in maintaining its future, alongside learning valuable geographical skills, which will be applicable in their wider lives.

Implementation:

As each project has a subject driver, geography at Stoneydelph will be mainly taught during the Geography driven projects. Check out the different landscapes and areas of the world you will be learning about below:

EYFS- The Big Wide World

Key stage 1- Splendid skies and Bright Lights Big City

Lower key stage 2- Misty Mountains Rocks, Relics and Rumbles

Upper key stage 2- Sow, Grow and Farm and Frozen Kingdom  

Impact:

With a carefully mapped curriculum and by identifying learning opportunities to use the key skills used in geography, we strive to create a supportive and collaborative ethos for learning by providing investigative and inquiry-based learning opportunities. Emphasis is placed on opportunities to help children deepen their understanding of the interaction between physical and human processes and how this affects landscapes and environments.

 

Below are our long term planning documents for each  year group and cycle. On these documents you can see the range of skills we aim to teach within each unit, the lesson name and how they link directly to the national curriculum. These allow us to carefully plan an exciting unit, link our learning and help to identify any gaps in order to help achieve the best progress possible. 
Below are our customised skill maps which help staff and pupils see the progression of the skills within the phases. This helps us see which skills and knowledge children should have from previous years and see how that skill progresses into their next year group. The skill maps are divided into 3 areas from the Geography National Curriculum and account for the new EYFS framework. These areas are Location and Place knowledge, Human and Physical features and also Geography skills and fieldwork.
